The Transportation Director will coordinate the operation of the school transportation department in such a state of excellence that it contributes to the positive education of all scholars in the district.  They will plan, direct, coordinate and oversee all functions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the transportation department, including personnel, equipment, and fleet vehicles. The prime concern is safe, efficient, economical transportation of students between home and school on a regular schedule, and between other destinations within or outside the District boundaries for school events. This position requires exceptional problem solving and interpersonal skills and the ability to acquire knowledge of transportation operations, policies, and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required, BA degree preferred
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and a clear driving record and background check
  • Possesses excellent communication skills (verbal/written)
  • Background in transportation operations preferred
  • Demonstrates the ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruption
  • Interacts with a diverse group of individuals in a courteous and tactful manner, and establishes and maintains effective relationships
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use email, routing computer systems, video equipment systems and other systems to obtain student transportation information as needed
  • Knowledge of appropriate dispatching policies and practices within a reasonable amount of time
  • Familiar with district roads and learn about transportation equipment and student needs
  • Obtains certificates as determined necessary by the district which may include a class B CDL license and other bus driver certification requirements

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains accurate logs of daily events, bus assignments, route coverage, etc.
  • Interacts with a diverse group of individuals in a courteous and tactful manner, and establishes and maintains effective relationships
  • Handles problems and stressful situations tactfully and applies proactive problem solving skills
  • Assists students and parents using patience and understanding and respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents or staff.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Oversees daily student transportation and fleet maintenance operations
  • Supervises general maintenance program with specific attention to safety inspections
  • Establishes performance standards and supervise operational care, service and maintenance of all vehicles within the department
  • Establishes all regular bus routes, schedules and stops and maintain routing software to develop route maps for drivers, school, etc. as appropriate
  • Coordinates student transportation activities with school officials
  • Recommends procurement of additional or replacement buses and disposal of old units
  • Responsible for maintaining and monitoring compliance with federal and state rules and regulations and Board Policies as they relate to transportation
  • Tracks, monitors, and approves expenditures of department funds
  • Promotes a productive environment for transportation staff and students by recognizing and solving problems and encouraging teamwork, creativity and understanding
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates Transportation personnel and makes recommendations related to employment and termination
  • Communicates with the Department of Special Education to provide reasonable, safe and prudent transportation services in compliance with district, state, and federal policy/laws
  • Works with the transportation staff to establish processes to assess needs and identifies plans and procedures to improve driver and department performances
  • Evaluates all elements of transportation program on a continuing basis
  • Works with principals, bus drivers, students, and parents regarding discipline or other issues related to transportation
  • Other duties as assigned

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs.
